RSS sucks | RSS is dead | R.I.P. RSS

Why should we stop talking about RSS?

RSS sucks logo

1. RSS is annoying and confusing.

RSS is based on a mom and pops business model. Some (non-geek) consumers like RSS for its resemblance to the traditional print newspaper. You subscribe – You get the news; basically, the medium has changed. Instead of receiving the print news on your doorstep, it’s on your computer.

The information is forced down the consumers throat. It is basically another push marketing strategy that gives little choice to the consumer (after subscrition to the feed – which a lot of people do after reading only one interesting update – rare are the people who are interested with all the updates on a feed)

2. RSS is a terrible name.

In fact, almost no one knows the meaning of the acronym.

3. People seek simplicity.

Really Simple Syndication is not that simple. It always involves third party software for reading/receiving updates. It’s complicated for my parents… it shouldn’t.

4. Information overload.

I have a very limited time. Daily, or even worse, hourly updates are just too much. Half of the updates are useless – Web sites post content to post content without determining if it’s actually useless to anyone.

That why I like content aggregators (Digg, for example).

RSS is dissapearing
