The Evolution of Apple Ads

Apple Logo

The evolution of Apple advertising is naturally very coherent with the evolution of it’s products. After the return of Steve Jobs in 1996 Apple marketing strategy was revamped.

Here is a few of the best (click to enlarge). Most of the Apple’s print adverts are, in fact, brochures and spread over 2 pages.

1976 Apple 1 Ad:

1977 Apple II “Simplicity” Brochure:

1981 Apple III “Will Someone Please?” Ad:

One of my personal favorites. Notice the first page is almost identical to today’s advertisements.

Macintosh TV commercial 1984:

«This was the commercial that introduced the Apple Macintosh Computer to the world.»

1986 Macintosh Plus Brochure:

The first computer I ever used (I was probably six years old?)

1992 Macintosh System 7 Ads:

From 1985 to 1998 apple ads were very descriptive and quite boring actually. Except for the 1995 ad below.

1995 “Imagine That” Windows 95 Spoof Ad:

1998 iMac Introduction Brochure:

Back to the original simplicity of Macintosh adverts (and computers).

2001 Titanium PowerBook G4 Ad:

Since the popularization of the iPod:

Mac vs PC ads:

When we look at today’s Apple ads we notice that they are mainly similar to their ads from the beginning of the 80’s.

The Money of Advertsing

In the fiscal year of 2009 Apple spent 501 million dollars in advertising budget.

Their advertsing seems to be very effective. Interbrands 2009 best global brands list puts Apple in 20th position with a value of more than 15 billion dollars, up 12% from 2008. Apple stores probably contributed a lot to this.
